TNB appointed as Sarawak’s Gas Aggregator to realise greater values from a more balanced distribution of gas resources throughout Sarawak, accelerating Sarawak’s economic growth to achieve a high-income status by 2030.

PSEP formalised its participation in two (2) Sarawak Exploration Production Sharing Contracts – SK510 and 5E, under the Malaysia Bid Round 2023.

December 2023

TNB’s retail liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) arm, PETRO-SNiaga Sdn Bhd holds 100% market share of subsidised 14kg LPG cylinders for household use in Sarawak.

Award of Earthworks contract for the proposed Miri CCGT Power Plant.

March 2023

TNB was issued the first licence for Carbon Storage to begin its strategic role Resource Manager for Sarawak’s Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) endeavour. The licence covers an area located in the North Luconia Province, offshore Bintulu.

● Official launch for the Pilot Project for Piped Natural Gas Supply at Medan Saberkas Miri.

Obtained State Planning Authority (SPA) approval for the proposed Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant – an anchor for the TNB Power Generation Roadmap Miri Hub Development and one of TNB’ first Capital Project.

● Signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between TNB and PETRONAS on a staggered increase of gas supply from 450 million standard cubic feet per day to 1.2 billion standard cubic feet per day by 2030.

● Acquisition of 50% equity in Kumang Cluster Production Sharing Contract (PSC) offshore Sarawak from PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd.

● Acquisition of 20% equity in MLNG Production Sharing Contract (PSC) offshore Sarawak from PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd and Sarawak Shell Berhad.

● TNB is the third highest equity gas producer and second highest equity condensate producer in Sarawak.

TNB Gas initialised consolidation of the domestic gas business in Sarawak:

● TNB Gas is the operator of the Miri Gas Distribution System (MGDS) and Bintulu Gas Distribution System (BGDS) and seller of gas to existing industrial, commercial and residential customers in Miri and Bintulu, respectively

● TNB Power Generation Sdn. Bhd. Sdn Bhd (SGDSB) is a wholly owned subsidiary of TNB Gas. SGDSB owns and operates the piped natural gas grid that supplies domestic gas to over 25,000 households and 1,000 commercial businesses in Miri, Sarawak.

ASEAN Bintulu Fertilizer was established in 1980 and commenced operations in 1985

Bintulu Crude Oil Terminal was the first major industrial project to commence construction in Tanjung Kidurong

Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd (MLNG) was incorporated. MLNG’s first export cargo delivered in January 1983

West Lutong delivered the first offshore oil production

Miri became the first town with the piped gas system. In 1995, the Miri natural gas pipeline grid was privatised to TNB Power Generation Sdn. Bhd. Sdn Bhd (a wholly owned subsidiary of TNB since 1 January 2020). Under SGDSB, pipe-laying expansion have brought some 25,000 households and 1,000 commercial businesses on-grid

Exploration expanded from onshore to offshore with Orient Explorer as the first mobile drilling rig to be used. Shell pioneered the first single buoy mooring (SBM) system, first in the world

Sarawak’s first oil refinery built by Shell at Tanjung Lobang, Miri. Subsequently moved to Lutong, Miri. A first submarine pipeline was laid in Miri, the first of its kind in the region. The 45,000 barrels per day designed capacity Lutong Oil Refinery operated until 2004

First Oil discovery by Shell Oilfield Limited in Miri. Well No 1 known as Grand Old Lady is situated at the top of Canada Hill, Miri
